If You Only Read One: May 2021
We know that we read — and review — a lot of books. It definitely helps that there are three of us, in that regard. So with this feature, we want to tell you our favorite read of the month - if we only recommend one book to pick up, what would it be?

If you’ve been following along with our Instagram, you know that I’ve spent the past few days in the world of ACOTAR — however, much to Rhys’ imagined chagrin, my favorite read this month was Stacey Abrams’ brilliant thriller “While Justice Sleeps” (Bookshop | Kindle | my review). Yes, I was really close to recommending Emily Henry’s newest, but I feel like that’s a bit of a cop out (you’re going to see it all over bookstagram the next few weeks, anyway). However, Stacey Abrams’ thriller was original, clever af, and reminded me of some of my favorite legal thrillers. 10/10, would recommend for a diverting summer read.

Emma Duffy-Comparone’s “Love Like That,” (Bookshop | Kindle ) was a totally surprising and riveting read. A collection of short stories about women on the edge, in any number of ways you might interpret that phrase, is both surprising and familiar—you’ll see yourself somewhere in the pages. An unflinching look at people’s worst qualities on full display at some of their worst moments, it is shocking, funny, and completely original.

I somehow read both “The Herd” (Kindle) and “A Special Place For Women” (Bookshop | Kindle) back to back—both set primarily in women’s-only co-working spaces based on “The Wing,” both examinations of consumer-driven feminism in late-stage capitalism. My review of the latter is coming this week, but the former, Andrea Bartz’s sophomore novel, is definitely the best book I read in May. Moira shared a full review awhile ago, but I loved this murder-mystery-slash-consumerism-feminist exploration. There were some great twists and turns, and although I did have trouble keeping some of the characters’ names straight, this one is well worth reading.
