Lit Hit List: Comfort Reads

Lit Hit List: Comfort Reads

Hi, everyone! I hope everyone—no matter where you are in the world—is staying safe and healthy. I’m on day 14 of working from home, and while I’m so grateful to be able to do so, I’ve been having trouble focusing on reading. I find myself picking up my phone to check Instagram and/or the news every 10 or 15 minutes, which is hardly an effective way to relax.

So, I’ve been gravitating toward books that are basically rom-coms. I dislike the term “chick lit” when it’s used to refer to a “guilty pleasure” because there’s nothing wrong with enjoying lighter books that center on women’s stories. If you’ve also been having trouble focusing and are looking for some reads to take your mind off the news, I suggest the following:

“The Single Girl’s To-Do List” by Lindsey Kelk: the title of this is a little ridiculous, but I found the novel about a newly single woman who’s obsessed with making lists and planning utterly charming.

“Love Lettering” by Kate Clayborn (Elizabeth’s review here): this is my current Kindle read. As someone with a fair amount of interests in fonts and a large amount of interest in New York City, I’m really enjoying this one.

“The Wedding Party” by Jasmine Guillory: all of Jasmine Guillory’s books are fun, a little steamy, and very very entertaining—perfect quarantine books!

“If I Never Met You” by Mhairi McFarlane: I adored “Don’t You Forget About Me” by the same author (my review here), so I’m looking forward to reading McFarlane’s newest, which just came out this week.

“Matchmaking For Beginnings” by Maddie Dawson: this is another one on my to-read list from my Kindle. Basically, if it’s a rom-com book, I want to read it right now.

“Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine” by Gail Honeyman: I read this one last year and loved reading about Eleanor, a very eccentric, socially awkward woman who has trouble with social cues and spends all of her time alone…until she meets the IT guy at her office.

“My Not-So-Perfect Life” by Sophie Kinsella: Sophie Kinsella’s books are sometimes hit or miss for me; I liked the Shopaholic books when I read them in college but I’m not sure they’d resonate with me now. But this one, about a woman who views life through her Instagram feed and thinks her life pales in comparison to others’, is a great commentary on social media.
