Lit Hit List: Comfort Reads Part 2
Just wanted to share a few recent reads that have kept me entertained while in quarantine!
“The Boyfriend Project” by Farrah Rochon: One of my Books of the Month picks this month. The premise was that a woman finds out via a viral Twitter thread that her boyfriend is dating two other women and they become friends. Which, is what happened at the very beginning of the book, but this was basically a workplace romance. I loved the main character’s drive and the book smartly dealt with racism, sexism, and tokenism in the workplace.
“In Five Years” by Rebecca Serle: Elizabeth already reviewed this one but I did want to mention it as I thought it was a great portrayal of a beautiful friendship. The main character is a super uptight lawyer who plans her life down to the T, and after she gets engaged, she has an extremely vivid dream where it’s 5 years later, she’s in another apartment and kisses another man. She puts off her wedding for years, and as it becomes closer to the date in her dream, she meets the mystery man. Definitely a bit of a tearjerker.
“Matchmaking For Beginners” by Maddie Dawson: a super cute rom-com about a woman who basically gets left at the alter, forces her fiance to get married anyway, and then promptly gets a divorce. Through a series of weird circumstances, she winds up temporarily moving to Brooklyn. There was also a bit of a magical component, which I didn’t expect, but did like.
“The Overdue Life of Amy Byler” by Kelly Harms: I couldn’t exactly relate to this story of a mom of two whose estranged husband reappears after a few years. She winds up taking an entire summer to herself while her kids stay with their dad, and ends up moving to New York and, of course, finds love (and herself). A cute breezy read.
“Who’s That Girl” by Mhairi McFarlane: Not my favorite of Mhairi’s books, but still fun! While attending a wedding of the man who basically emotionally manipulated her, the groom kisses our main character and the story goes viral. She flees to her hometown to work on a special project for her company, and romance, of course, ensues.
“The Guest List” by Lucy Foley: another Book of the Month pick! This was a bit of a whodunit—we know someone at a wedding gets murdered, but we don’t know who’s responsible. The novel is told from the perspective of multiple characters which usually annoys me but in this case, I liked getting a peek into everyone’s potential motives. There were definitely some surprises here!
